Perspectives on Intensives, 2019
Author Sidney Pope December 19, 2019
Intensives 2019 are here at TYWLS of Astoria. Intensives are a two-week-long class, where students work on a big real-world project. Intensives are also about learning new things and discovering some of your unknown strengths. Teachers and students get to know each other and take part in different activities.
Isabella Casanova, a 9th grader at TYWLS of Astoria, shares, “You have to be patient and it’s really fun.” Her intensive, Escape the Room, is very fun for her. She further explains, “You get to build new fun things, but you have to have a lot of patience in order to get where you want to be.”
Falaq Amjad is in the 9th grade as well. She explains how her intensive is a lot of work. She needs a lot of energy as she is in the Running intensive. She expresses, “You have to have a lot of energy and it’s tiring.”
“I like how everyone is doing something different and how they make some of their own choices.” - Scott
Scott Melcher is a teacher at TYWLS and elaborates on how his intensive Extra Extra, helps some people who like making stories. He says they can do just that, and the students are able to make their own choices in order to make their story the way they would want it to sound or look.
Getting to know each students' point of view on their intensive is intriguing. It shows that they have a voice and how they can do anything. Having the opportunity to take part in intensives allow students to connect the activities done for two weeks as a possible job option.
Overall, it is good to learn new things every day and teach yourself new abilities because it helps you to become better in life and allows a person to get where they wish to go.
